Dr Joy McCarthy
Resident in Table View since March 1976. Raised two children here, who both attended the local high school which I helped to acquire way back when I served on the Exco of the original TVRA. Am not a medical doctor, but a research scientist at UCT , specializing in heart disease.
I love living in Table View , with its unique views of the mountain, Robben Island and the vlei and am passionate about retaining the character of the Table View I moved to so many years ago.
I feel that we can find some middle point which will allow controlled densification without obliterating the existing character of the suburb.

Ward 4
Born and educated in Cape Town, qualified as a Pharmacist in South Africa in 1967, and a registered member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, since 1968.
I have worked in the UK for over two years, during my working career, and I also wrote the entrance examination for practising in the U.S.A.in 1995
I was employed by the Provincial Administration for most of my working life and took early retirement in 1996. I then served as managing director of a Pharmaceutical company, Amayeza Pharmaceuticals for 4 years and was responsible for the registration of new generic pharmaceuticals. I have been active in the field of computers since the early 1980’s and in the building trade and have built two residential houses, one in which I reside and a newly completed factory. I now serve as the Chairman of the Arum Road subcommittee on the TVRA.
I have lived in Table View since 1974 and am one of the pioneers, who came out here to enjoy the peaceful country-like atmosphere and quiet urban existence.
Focus of interest: I am particularly interested in proper town planning, specifically the use of unequivocal and enforceable legislation, in areas demarcated for specific usage e.g. residential, which can be divided up into single dwelling/multi-dwelling units with the only permitted departures being reasonable building alterations to existing properties which do not alter the nature or purpose of the existing dwelling and are in keeping and compliment the surrounding properties. The same legislation would be applied to other classes of areas zoned for business, commercial or industrial or whatever purpose.
I am deeply concerned at the changes made by developers, landowners and allowed by the Planning department to all parts of Table View eg beachfront, illegal businesses, poor town planning and development issues, high-rises, and matters involving environmental issues, ignoring the outrage expressed by residents of the area. It seems clear to me that we have not learned or benefited by our mistakes of the past and that avaricious developers are running roughshod over our rights to enjoy this once beautiful suburb.
